All Pokemon Games By Generation
There have been so many Pokemon games over the years, not to mention all of the spin-off titles, and it got us thinking about making a list of all Pokemon games by generation order so we could look at how the series has grown.
So, that’s exactly what we’ve done!
We’ve come a long way from Pokemon Red to Pokemon Violet, but it’s interesting to see just how much of a profound effect those Generation 1 titles have had on the rest of the series.
Not to mention all of the people that instantly Google ‘where is Pikachu’ every time a new game drops!

1. Kanto – Generation 1
- Games: Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, Let’s Go Pikachu, Let’s Go Eevee
- Pokdedex: 151
It stands to reason that Generation 1 would have the most games in it. I mean, Nintendo keep going back to the original Kanto adventure not necessarily because it’s the best (although it is), but because it’s the most nostalgic.
Where would we be without Pallet Town or Viridian Forest?
Generation 1 contains Pokemon Red and Blue, the original games in the series released in the West. Then we have Pokemon Yellow, the special edition version of the first two games, a theme that would become prevalent throughout the next few generations.
The GBA went back to Kanto for FireRed and LeafGreen (Red and Green being the original titles in Japan), as did the Switch with Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee.

2. Johto – Generation 2
- Games: Pokemon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, SoulSilver
- Johto Pokedex: 251
- New Pokemon: 100
Next up in our all Pokemon games by generation list is the GBC series of Pokemon games and their eventual DS counterparts.
Yes, the Pokemon series really came alive when Nintendo finally brought colour into the mix. Pokemon Gold, Silver, and the special edition Crystal were phenomenal back in the day, adding a whopping 100 new Pokemon for us to catch.
HeartGold and SoulSilver are two of the best Nintendo DS games and the most played DS titles here at Retro Dodo Towers. They’re absolute classics and brought some new designs to the menu system that were greatly appreciated!
3. Hoenn – Generation 3
- Games: Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire
- Hoenn Pokedex: 202
- New Pokemon: 135
Generation 3 of the Pokemon games brought 135 new Pokemon into our midst.
The Meteorish TJD T101 Is A Handheld That Looks Like A CheeseboardPokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and the special edition Emerald saw Mudkip, Treeko, and Torchic starting off on epic adventures into the Hoenn region.
Some of you may well have first experienced these game on the 3DS when they dropped in 2014, battling Groudon and Kyogre in true 3D as though you were right in the thick of the action.
And with 202 Pokemon to catch, there was a nice mix of nostalgia twinned with a sense of the unknown – catching new Pokemon you’ve never heard of before is what Pokemon is all about, despite what all the die-hard Pika fans might say!
4. Sinnoh – Generation 4
- Games: Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl
- Sinnoh Pokedex: 151 (210 in Platinum)
- New Pokemon: 107 (166 in Platinum)
It’s time to head to Sinnoh as we check out the next entry in our all Pokemon games by generation article!
Platinum differs from the previous special edition versions of the base games of its generation by adding way more Pokemon into the mix. As you can see above, Diamond and Pearl brought 107 new Pokemon, but Platinum went above and beyond by dropping in an extra 59!
Diamond and Pearl are the latest to get the Nintendo Switch treatment in the form of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. They play just like Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee and are the perfect way for fans to delve back into Sinnoh.
5. Unova – Generation 5
- Games: Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, White 2
- Unova Pokedex: 156 (301 in Black 2 & White 2)
- New Pokemon: 156
Black and White had a roster of completely different Pokemon to catch, with 156 new critters making up the entire Pokedex.
Some people didn’t like the fact that there weren’t any previous famous faces lurking around to battle with, but I enjoyed that feeling I got while playing Pokemon Red and Blue where I had no idea who any of the Pokemon were.
It wasn’t till Black 2 and White 2 that we got more Pokemon to catch, adding in some previous fan favourites and giving us 301 to seek out throughout Unova.
The starter Pokemon are the same in both the original Black and White and their sequels, with new locations, redesigned gyms, and a new story.
They might not have the most inventive names in the world, but Black 2 and White 2 are well worth playing!
6. Kalos – Generation 6
- Games: Pokemon X, Y
- Kalos Pokedex: 150
- New Pokemon: 72
We’ve only got two games to talk about in this next section of our All Pokemon games by generation article, though they’re both two of the best Nintendo 3DS games going!
The Pokedex for both X & Y is a manageable 150, with 72 new Pokemon joining 78 Pokemon from the previous games.
Y also brought one of my favourite Pokemon and one of the strongest bird Pokemon of all time Yveltal to the table. That guy can really cause havoc!

7. Alola – Generation 7
- Games: Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon
- Alola Pokedex: 301
- New Pokemon: 86
Now that’s more like it – 301 Pokemon to catch throughout the Sun, Moon, and Ultra adaptations.
The main difference here between the base and Ultra games is the storyline and new character customisation options, a little like Black/White and Black 2/White 2.
With 86 new Pokemon to catch including Solgaleo and Lunala, it’s an exciting adventure that has enough of the Kanto Pokemon to please early fans to to the series.
And yes, that includes Pikachu and Snorlax… you can breathe easy now!
8. Galar – Generation 8
- Games: Pokemon Sword, Shield
- Galar Pokedex: 400
- New Pokemon: 96
Just like the Harry Potter books eventually got bigger, so too are the Pokemon Pokedexes. I mean, there are currently over 1000 Pokemon as I write this article, so it stands to reason that we’re going to have our work cut out for us in these games!
Galar brought 96 new Pokemon to the table but gave us 400 to chase down. Running through the Wild area, picking up Galarian Zapdos, harnessing the power of Eternatus… this game was something else.
Plus Zacian and Zamazenta are two gnarly legendaries and undoubtedly the best dog Pokemon of all time.
If only Nintendo could have done away with Hop; that guy makes my blood boil!
9. Paldea – Generation 9
- Games: Pokemon Scarlet, Violet
- Paldea Pokedex: 400
- New Pokemon: 107
The final entry in our all Pokemon games by generation article sees players stepping into Paldea for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
Like its predecessors, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet bring 400 Pokemon for us to catch with 107 new critters to encounter and train. The games might have changed a heck of a lot since the early days, but the same excitement of seeing that Pokeball close around a Pokemon in the field is just as palpable as it was back then.
Quaxly certainly looks to have a lot more brains than Psyduck, and I reckon that Fuecoco and Charmander would have been best mates.

There are 151 Pokemon in the Pokedex in Generation 1, the very first Pokemon to feature in the games.
How Many Pokemon Are There In Generation 2
There are 251 Pokemon in the Pokedex in Generation 2 with 100 new Pokemon to find.
How Many Pokemon Are There In Generation 3
There are 202 Pokemon in the Pokedex in Generation 3 with 135 new Pokemon to find.
